Massachusetts Association for Women in Education Announces 2004 Award Recipients

Boston, MA April 4, 2004--The Mary E. Tobin Award for Outstanding Achievement and Inspirational Leadership will be presented to Dr. Nancy Stoll, Dean of Students at Suffolk University. This award honors a woman who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in her field and, by her example, has served as an inspiration and role model for other women. Typically presented to an individual who is serving in a senior level position (Dean, Vice President, President, etc.) or a member of the faculty who has made mentorship to young professionals a priority. In her capacity as Dean of Students, Nancy is responsible for creating and maintaining programs and services that enhance student life at the University. Her office functions as a resource and source of referral for a variety of student concerns and welcomes the opportunity to hear from students about their experiences at the University. She has been credited by those who know her well for, "literally building the student services division from scratch at Suffolk."

The MAWE Award for Professional Excellence will be presented to Sarah Neil, Associate Dean of Students at Simmons College. This MAWE Award is presented to a woman who has performed consistently at the highest standards when in roles of increasing responsibility. This award is presented to an individual who is 5-8 years into their professional career, and is in a mid-level position. Sarah is an understated and compassionate leader, who does a highly effective job mentoring and supervising staff. In her role she is known as someone her staff can depend on and her coworkers can call upon to "fill in" when posts are vacant or when new projects are being implemented.

The 2004 New Professional Award will be awarded to Erin Evans. The New Professional Award recognizes the achievement and dedicated spirit of a woman in the early stages of her professional development. Erin is currently the Coordinator of Disability Services at Babson College. Erin works tirelessly to support the students with learning disabilities on the Babson College campus. Although she has been at Babson College for a very short time, her students feel she has made every effort to get to know each of the students in her charge and make a meaningful connection with them all.

The MAWE Award for Community Service will be presented to Damita Davis, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, Emmanuel College. Recipients of the Community Service Award have demonstrated commitment and participation in community service organizations which may include, but are not limited to, a particular emphasis on women. During the summer of 2003, Damita spearheaded the development of a luncheon for women of color working in higher education in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She is a current member of the MAWE executive board and continues to work diligently in an effort to continue the work that was started at this summer luncheon and to provide programs and opportunities that are targeted toward meeting the needs of women of color.
